The Big Maple
Daughter → Mom
Mother's Day · Folk
Mom, you probably don't know this, but I still think about that big maple at the park — you reading to me out there on summer afternoons till we both fell asleep in the grass. I'm all grown up now, my own place, my own mess of bills, and I still call you every time I don't know what to do. I think part of me will always be that kid leaning on your arm. Thank you for being the one I come back to. I love you, Mom.

Song story

Background
Nora is 27, and her clearest little-kid memory is the park down the street from their old house — the big maple where her mom Kim used to read to her on summer afternoons until they both dozed off. Nora's got her own apartment and her own bills now, but she still calls her mom whenever she can't figure something out. For Mother's Day she wanted to say she still needs her, and she said it in a gentle folk song about that tree.
